GUATEMALA

Touted as the "Sailfish Capital of the World", Guatemala truly is the adventurous anglers best bet for landing his or her first 'sail on the fly. It is a land of marvelous colors, incredible nature, a diverse history and historic places. Its third world charm isn't for everyone and a quick visit to the U.S. Embassy website could alter even a seasoned travelers decision of going. Although, we at REELHARD feel that our experience there was enjoyable, safe, clean and friendly. Not once, did we ever feel threatened or concerned for our safety.

Here are a few travel tips:

(1) Don't flash cash, especially wads of it, 75% of the population is at or below poverty level.

(2) Expensive items should be shielded from view, as well.

(3) Private van drivers are also encouraged and should be arranged through a reputable operator, like Brian Baraggy, owner of Pez Aguazul Pro Sportfishing; www.fishingguatemala.com He can help you with numerous details for a successful fishing adventure.

(4) Cash rules, credit cards and traveler's checks aren't widely accepted.

(5) Research and book your accommodations in advance; we stayed at Villas del Pacifico and can't say enough about their entire operation. The grounds are perfectly manicured and roaming. The rooms are colorful and well equipped with a telephone and TV, a nice balcony, double beds and a bathroom-complete with blow dryer.

(6) Bottled water is always the safest bet in any third world country.

(7) Send a scan of your passport to the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala; a simple task that will save you a lot of hassle should you misplace yours.

(8) Night travel isn't encouraged.

(9) Traveling in groups or convoys is deemed safer.

(10) Ask permission before photographing people, especially children.

(11) Tipping is always appreciated.

This article,"Sailing", Guatemala Style, written by Bennett Mintz, is a realistic portrayal of the Guatemalan fishing experience. Reelhard cameras and crew tagged along with Bennett and other fly anglers during the aforementioned endeavor.
